Gayle ton helps Barisal thrash Sylhet
MIRPUR: Chris Gayle smashed 101 off just 44 deliveries to take Barisal Burners to an easy win against Sylhet Royals in the opening game of the Bangladesh Premier League in Mirpur on Friday.
Sylhet’s total of 165 seemed like a competitive one, but Gayle made a mockery of it, hitting 10 sixes and seven fours in his inning. Barisal were home in 13.1 overs. Gayle was well supported by Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad, who scored 56 off 35 balls with nine fours and a six.
Sylhet’s Australian import, Brad Hogg, could not keep Gayle quiet, and went for 27 in his three overs. Hogg though didn’t have it as bad as two other Sylhet overseas players—Peter Trego and Scott Styris went for 23 and 27 in their only overs.
Trego had earlier helped Sylhet recover from a sluggish start to reach a decent total, with his 62. His 105-run partnership with Alok Kapali (56) formed the bulk of Sylhet’s total. They were both bowled by Pakistani allrounder Yasir Arafat in the final over.
Gayle was declared man of the match. In the other game of the day, Chittagong Kings defeated Duronto Rajshahi by 53 runs thanks to a fine allround performance by DJ Bravo and a quick half century by Pakistani left hander Nasir Jamshed.
Duronto Rajshahi never looked like getting close to the target of 207 runs set by Chittagong Kings. They were all out for 153 in the last over. Junaid Siddique scored 42 off 23 balls and Sabbir Rahman got 41 off 28 balls.
Bravo got three wickets in as many overs, giving away just 17 runs. Enamul Haq Jr also grabbed three wickets. Muralitharan had two victims.
Earlier, Nasir Jamshed hit three sixes and five fours in his 56-run knock, which came off just 38 deliveries. He was involved in a 91-run stand with JJ Roy who scored 43 off 25 balls, including three sixes and three fours.
After these two fell, Mahmudullah and Bravo further accelerated the run rate, with the former getting 43 off just 18 balls and the latter 38 from 19 balls. DJ Bravo was declared man of the match.
