Sharp India dismiss Australia for 131
20 overs Australia 131 (Finch 36, Praveen Kumar 2-21) v India
India found the spark they have been looking for all summer with an exciting and skilful display in the field that restricted Australia to 131 in the second Twenty20 at the MCG. Ravindra Jadeja was the catalyst with a pair of excellent run-outs, while Rohit Sharma also threw down the stumps and MS Dhoni completed a lightning stumping.
Their work in the field left Australia feeling constricted, with the flow of boundaries nowhere near what it was in the first game. Useful innings from Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch gave Australia's bowlers something to defend, but after George Bailey won the toss and chose to bat, being dismissed in the 20th over was hardly the display he wanted from his men.
Australia were dismissed with two balls to spare, when Xavier Doherty was run out thanks to sharp work from Suresh Raina, whose throw was collected by Dhoni. It was the fourth run-out of the innings and it meant Australia had lost 4 for 10 since the start of the 19th over, with Brad Hogg having been trapped lbw for 4 off Rahul Sharma the ball before Doherty's run-out.
Wade had made 32 from 28 balls when he pushed to cover and took off only to be turned back by Lee, and Rohit's excellent direct hit had Wade short despite his full-length dive. Next ball, Clint McKay edged behind off Vinay Kumar for a golden duck and Australia's hopes of a late run surge took even more of a dive.
They had some hope while Wade and Mitchell Marsh put together a 26-run stand, but the loss of the powerful Marsh hurt. He was stumped off Rahul Sharma: Dhoni collected the ball close to the stumps and with no give in his gloves, he hardly had to move to whip the bails off and find Marsh just out of his ground for 13.
Australia had struggled to build momentum early as India kept finding ways to take wickets. David Hussey saw two of his partners run out before he was caught and bowled for 24 off 29 bowls when his leading edge lobbed back to Jadeja. It had been Jadeja who effected both run-outs with sharp fielding, the type India rarely displayed in the Test series.
The big wicket was that of Aaron Finch, who was sent in alongside David Warner at the top of the order and showed his power with six fours, five of which were through the off side. Finch launched drives and cuts at anything wide of off and at one stage he had aggregated more than 100 Twenty20 international runs without being dismissed, but that changed quickly.
Finch was caught short when Hussey pushed into the off side and tried for a single that wasn't there, Jadeja's throw getting rid of Finch for 36 from 23 balls. And the captain George Bailey departed soon afterwards when he overcommitted as Hussey steered the ball to backward point, where Jadeja collected and threw to the bowler's end with Bailey (3) a long way short.
Australia's innings had got off to a poor start with the early loss of Warner, who was caught at deep midwicket for 8 when he skied a ball off Praveen Kumar. And Shaun Marsh's miserable summer continued with a second-ball duck, his limp prod outside off resulting in an edge to first slip, where Virender Sehwag parried the ball up to MS Dhoni to give Praveen his second wicket.
Marsh was one of three inclusions for Australia, along with Finch and Clint McKay. James Faulkner, Daniel Christian and Travis Birt were left out from the side that won the first game in Sydney on Wednesday, while India made no changes.
